Mumbai: Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday donated Rs 1 crore to ‘Mission Oxygen’ for procuring oxygen concentrators for COVID-19 patients amid an uncontrollable surge of cases in the second wave in India.
A group of young entrepreneurs, based in Delhi-NCR, has launched ‘Mission Oxygen’ to raise funds with which they will import oxygen concentrators and donate them to hospitals across the country facing severe oxygen shortage.
“His donation of Rs 1 crore to ‘Mission Oxygen’ in its endeavour to procure and provide life-saving oxygen concentrators to hospitals across the nation in this time of need is incredibly heart-warming,” Mission Oxygen said in a statement.
Tendulkar, who announced on his 48th birthday five days ago that he would be donating plasma for COVID patients, took to Twitter to praise the Mission Oxygen initiative.
Tendulkar recovered from coronavirus after spending some days in the hospital early this month.
The cricket fraternity has been extending a helping hand in India’s massive fight against COVID’s second wave. IPL franchises Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals contributed Rs 7.5 crore and Rs 1.5 crore, respectively, while KKR’s Australian pacer Pat Cummins donated $50,000 to purchase oxygen supplies for Indian hospitals.
