Mumbai: Multiplex Association of India (MAI), Bollywood actors and producers appealed to the Centre to open the cinema halls that have remained shut since the country went into COVID-19 induced lockdown since March 25.

The government began unlocking in a phased manner since June with relaxations in domestic travel, markets, offices, shopping complexes etc outside containment zones.

Amid rising COVID-19 cases across the country, under the Centre’s Unlock 4.0 guidelines, cinema chains have not been allowed to operate. The official account of the MAI tweeted under the hashtag “Support Movie Theatres” that the cinema industry is not only an inherent part of the country’s culture but also an integral part of the economy, “supporting millions of livelihoods.”

“Most countries across the world have allowed cinemas to operate. We request the Government of India to allow us to operate as well. We are committed to offering a safe and hygienic cinema experience.

“If aviation, metro, malls, wellness and restaurants can be allowed to operate, the cinema industry too deserves a chance,” MAI wrote.

A set of SOPs to various Central ministries as well as Prime Minister’s Office and Niti Aayog was submitted by MAI last month.

Producer Boney Kapoor, whose film ‘Maidaan’ was stalled amid the pandemic, wrote on Twitter, “#SupportMovieTheatres #SaveCinemas.”

Kapoor was joined by industry colleagues, including actors Parvin Dabas, Abhimanyu Dassani and others.
