Agartala: Two female journalists have been booked in Tripura under sections relating to spreading communal disharmony, provoking breach of peace and criminal conspiracy.
An FIR was registered against Samriddhi K Sakunia and Swarna Jha at Fatikroy police station in Unakoti district following a complaint by Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists.
The journalists of digital news portal HW News Portal, who were reporting on alleged religious vandalism in Tripura, have been asked to appear on November 21.
“They were served notice under a case booked at Fatikroy police station to appear in next seven days. They received the notice and assured that they would come back in seven days,” a senior official of Tripura Police told indianexpress.com.
The two journalists tweeted that they were in Tripura for a ‘ground report’ on last month’s communal disturbances and had sought police permission and protection for the same.
However, they claimed in video tweets that police personnel were posted outside their hotel, preventing them from going anywhere.
Tripura Police, however, denied that cops were deployed outside the journalists’ hotel in a tweet.
