New York: Eighteen patients, suffering from rectal cancer, were completely cured in a clinical trial of a drug called Dostarlimab.
According to the New York Times, Dostarlimab was administered to the 18 patients for around six months, at the end of which all of them were completely cured. The absence of cancer at the end of the clinical trial was confirmed by physical exam, endoscopy, positron emission tomography or PET scans or MRI scans.
Dr Luis A Diaz J of New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center said this was “the first time this has happened in the history of cancer”.
According to the New York Times, the patients who were part of the trial had been through chemotherapy, radiation and invasive surgery that could result in bowel, urinary and even sexual dysfunction. They were expecting to again go through them after the trial. However, to their surprise, they found themselves completely cured.
The findings are making waves in the medical world.
