Malkangiri: Incessant rainfall triggered by a cyclonic storm in the last 24 hours have triggered a flood-like situation in remote areas of Malkangiri district causing extensive damage to crops and disrupting road connectivity.
According to reports, hundreds of acres of agricultural land have been damaged and several bridges submerged following a rise in the water level of major rivers, including Poteru, Saberi and Sileru. Flood water could be seen flowing 4-5 feet above a bridge near MV-37 village, cutting off connectivity between Malkangiri and Balimela. People remained stranded as a road near Tarlakata was also inundated, reports added.
Meanwhile, rain and thundershowers are likely to occur at most places in coastal districts of Odisha during the next 24 hours under the influence of the low pressure over the Bay of Bengal. The IMD regional centre here has also forecast heavy rainfall at one or two places over South Odisha.
