Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee urged everyone to hit the streets and force the BJP-led Central government to repeal the contentious farm laws.
Speaking on the second day of the West Bengal Assembly session, the chief minister alleged that the BJP is deliberately maligning the protesting farmers by calling them ‘anti nationals’.
“If the farmers suffer, there will be food shortage across the country. The farm bills will not just affect Haryana and Punjab but will also have an impact on Bengal… so the BJP government should revoke the farm laws immediately,” said Mamata, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should resign if the laws are not repealed.
Reiterating that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supports the farmers, Mamata said that she will extend all possible help to those who have been agitating at various points of the Delhi border for over two months.
BJP MLAs responded by chanting slogans against the chief minister and walked out after protesting in the well. They said the laws should not be repealed as they have already been enacted four months ago.
“The chief minister claims that she is maintaining the culture of West Bengal. But her speeches don’t reveal that. There is no need to repeale the farm laws,” said a BJP MLA.
