New Delhi: Girish Chandra Murmu, the former LG of Jammu and Kashmir, took oath as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday. President Ramnath Kovind administered the oath ceremony.
The retired IAS officer from Odisha had resigned ahead of his tenure as the Lt Governor of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, the first anniversary of abrogation of Article 370. He had assumed charge as the first LG of the Union Territory on October 29 last year.
Murmu replaced Rajiv Mehrishi, a 1978-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, as the CAG. He is the first Odia to be appointed to the post.
A native of Betnoti in Mayurbhanj district, the 1985-batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer was the principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi when the latter was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He is considered a close confidant of the Prime Minister.
