Bhubaneswar: Former assistant manager of a bank in the capital city was arrested by the Commissionerate Police on Tuesday on the charges of issuing loan against the fixed deposit of a customer.
The former staff bank official Meena Naik was arrested following a complaint filed by 62-year-old Hrushikesh Bhujabal, a retired government employee.
Naik was arrested after a joint raid by Anti-Fraud Cell and Bharatpur Police, said police. According to the complaint filed by Bhujabal, he had transferred Rs 10 lakh (retirement money) to the Ghatikia branch of the bank as fixed deposit on October 16.
The former assistant manager allegedly used the fixed deposit to sanction loan amounting to Rs 7 lakh. The loan was transferred to different bank accounts without the knowledge of the customer.
Bhubaneswar DCP, Umashankar Dash said this was not the first time that the AM concerned did this, he had cheated over Rs 1 crore of 6 to 7 other customers. After the irregularity was detected during audit, action was taken against the official who then returned some amount.
Further investigation into the matter is on, said Dash.
