Jeypore: A former sarpanch was shot at by a group of suspected Maoists at Dandabadi village under Boipariguda block in Koraput district on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Anand Charika, sustained bullet injuries on his head and belly. He was immediately rushed to a local public health centre in an ambulance and later shifted to Jeypore hospital after his condition deteriorated.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place around 2 pm when Charika was on his way to a weekly market. A group of 10-12 ultras in plain clothes, opened four rounds of fire on him and fled the spot.
Police have started inquiry basing on the statements of some local residents.
