Mumbai: Former chairman of Tata Sons Cyrus Pallonji Mistry was killed in a road accident near Palghar, Maharashtra, on Sunday. He was 54.
The accident took place when the Mercedes car hit the road divider on the Surya River Charoti bridge on the Mumbai Ahmedabad National Highway while he was en route to Mumbai from Ahmedabad, the PTI reported.
“The accident took place around 3.15 pm when Mistry was travelling to Mumbai from Ahmedabad. The accident took place on a bridge over the Surya river. It seems an accident,” a police official was quoted as saying by TOI.
Four people were present in the car at the time of the accident. While two died on spot, the other two, including the driver, were shifted to a hospital in Gujarat.
Mistry is survived by his wife and two children.
The business tycoon was the sixth chairman of Tata Sons and only the second person without the Tata surname to be appointed to the post after Nowroji Saklatwala. He took over as the chairman on December 28, 2012, after Ratan Tata announced his retirement. He joined the Board of Tata Sons in 2006 after his father Pallonji Mistry, a construction tycoon and chairman of Shapoorji Pallonji Group, retired. However, he was ousted from the position on October 24, 2016.
