Bhubaneswar: A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the north Andaman Sea and its neighbourhood around October 18, the regional centre of India Meteorological Department said on Friday.
The Met Office, in its North Indian Ocean Extended Range Outlook for Cyclogenesis, on Thursday had informed about the possibility of formation of a low-pressure area over southeast and adjoining central parts of the Bay of Bengal around October 20 with ‘moderate’ chances of its intensifying further.
“There is a likelihood of formation of a cyclonic circulation over the north Andaman Sea and its neighbourhood around October 17-18 with west-northwestwards movement and further intensification into a low-pressure area by October 20 over southeast and adjoining central parts of Bay of Bengal,” the IMD said.
“Further, there is moderate probability (34-67%) that the low-pressure area would move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal during the beginning of the week 2,” the outlook added.
Amid speculation regarding the formation of Cyclone ‘Sitrang’ over the Bay of Bengal, the IMD had earlier termed it as a rumour and urged people not to fall for it. The weatherman clarified that scientifically specific weather forecasts cannot be made seven days in advance.

Later speaking to the media on Wednesday, IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that there is no forecast for a cyclone in the next 7 days and no threat for Odisha. He further said that the fresh system is likely to move west-northwestward towards the southern part of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. “As per our analysis, there are no chances of intensification of the system into a cyclone,” he said.
