Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area is likely to form over the South Andaman sea around November 29. It is likely to become more marked and move west-northwestward in subsequent 48 hours, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre tweeted on Friday.
According to senior meteorologist Jason Nicholls, low pressure can form near the Malay Peninsula this weekend then push into the Andaman Sea early next week. “It can strengthen as it tracks NW over the Bay of Bengal later next week. A western disturbance can turn it toward Odisha, WestBengal, Bangladesh or NE India next weekend,” he tweeted.
All models indicate west-northwestward movement for the initial 2 days, followed by northwestward and then northward and northeastward track up to December 4-5, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The majority of the weather models have predicted that the system will concentrate into depression by December 3 and intensify into a severe category cyclone during subsequent 24-48 hours. “A ‘moderate’ probability is assigned for cyclogenesis (formation of a Depression) over southeast BoB towards the end of week 1 and over central parts of the BoB during the initial half of week 2,” it said.
Squally weather with maximum sustained wind speed reaching 40-50 gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail over Andaman Sea and neighbourhood between November 30 and December 2, it added.
