Bargarh: Irate villagers beat up a policeman for trying to rescue an oil tanker driver for their clutches after his vehicle ran over a college student, killing her on the spot, in the district on Thursday.
According to sources, the girl student was going to her college at Saradhapalli under Gaisilet police limits when the oil tanker ran over her. The girl died on the spot.
As the tanker driver was trying to flee after parking his vehicle, the local villagers caught hold of him and started beating him up. Tension prevailed in the area as vehicles on both sides of the road got stranded due to the incident.
On being informed, personnel from Gaisilet police station rushed to the spot to restore normalcy. As the police tried to rescue the driver from the agitated villagers, the latter beat up the policeman also.
Later, additional police forces went to the village and rescued both the driver and the policeman. They also dispersed the villagers and restored traffic movement on the road.
