Bhadrak: A huge quantity of government-supplied medicines was found dumped near a canal at a village in Bhandaripokhari area of Odisha’s Bhadrak district on Sunday.

The medicines lying along a canal included several life-saving drugs and bottles including multivitamins and calcium tablets.  The incident came to light after some locals spotted the drugs lying at the site. The value of the medicines is yet to be ascertained, sources said.

The medicines were reportedly supplied by the government to different hospitals under ‘Niramaya Yojana’. Under this scheme,  the state government aims to provide essential medicines free of cost to the people.

Following the incident, questions are being raised in the area over the ambitious scheme. The medicine strips reportedly bear the logo of the Odisha government suggesting it to have been issued by the Odisha State Medical Corporation(OSMC).

No senior health official was immediately available for comment. The circumstances in which the medicines were thrown in the area are yet to be ascertained.
