New Delhi: Heavy rains in Delhi and collapse of a portion of a roof in Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport inconvenienced passengers no end on Friday.

As a measure to stop further problems for air travellers, the Central government issued a virtual warning to all airline companies.

In an advisory issued on Friday evening, the Civil Aviation ministry asked airlines to ensure there are no “abnormal surcharges” on flights to and from Delhi after IGI airport’s Terminal 1 was forced to suspend operations.

“In view of the unfortunate incident at Terminal T1D IGIA, Delhi, all airlines are advised to monitor any abnormal surge in airfares to and from Delhi and take necessary action regarding the same. Further, cancellations and rescheduling of flights due to the incident may be done without penal charges,” the ministry said in a post on X.

All departures from IGIA’s Terminal 1, which handles around 1,400 domestic flights daily, have been suspended till midnight.

IndiGo and SpiceJet, which operate their domestic flights from Terminal 1, cancelled several flights and temporarily moved operations to Terminals 2 and 3.

The horrific accident, around 5 am, killed one person and left at least 6 injured.

A case was registered under Section 304A (death due to negligence) and Section 337 (endangering the life and personal safety of another) of the IPC.
