Bhubaneswar: Tension ran high at Congress Bhawan here following a violent clash between two factions of the Youth Congress on Tuesday.
According to reports, tension had been simmering after Indian Youth Congress president BV Srinivas named Smruti Ranjan Lenka as the interim president of the Odisha Pradesh Youth Congress (OPYC) on June 18.
However, some OPYC members had opposed Lenka’s appointment.
On Tuesday, the anti-Lenka faction locked the main gate of Congress Bhawan. At this, Lenka’s supporters broke the lock and barged on the premises. This was followed by a clash between the two groups in which some members from both sides were injured.
Following information, police rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the members. But as the situation went out of control, police resorted to lathi-charge and detained a member.
