Sambalpur: Ahead of Dhanteras and Diwali festivals, officials of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Department conducted a raid at a jewellery shop in Odisha’s Sambalpur district.
According to sources, the raid began around 11 am at Biju Jewellers Private Limited at Marwadipada. They examined the gold ornaments, hallmarks, and relevant documents of the gold sale in the last few days.
“It is the duty of officials to do their duty and check the authenticity as people usually buy gold during Dhanteras. There is no ill intention behind this raid,” the owner of Biju Jewellers Private Limited told local media.
While a 10-membered team of GST officials conducted a surprise raid at the store, another team raided the owner’s house.
Notably, the owner has also been accused of tax evasion. During the checking, bundles of cash were recovered by the officials.
