Mumbai: Activist Teesta Setalvad was arrested on Saturday for allegedly giving false information about the 2002 Gujarat riots.
A team of Gujarat anti-terror squad (ATS) went to Teesta’s Mumbai residence in Juhu and took her to Santacruz Police Station. Later, ATS took her in their custody and is taking her to Ahmedabad, India Today reported.
Two former IPS officers, along with Teesta, have reportedly been booked for providing false information about the Gujarat riots.
On Friday, the Supreme Court upheld the Special Investigation Team’s clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and 63 others in the 2002 riots case which led to over 1,000 deaths after a train was burnt in Godhra killing 58 pilgrims returning from Ayodhya.
Earlier today, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in an interview Teesta Setalvad gave baseless information to police about the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Shah also said that Teesta’s NGO Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) had submitted applications to several police stations against BJP workers, which were taken to be the truth by the public.
The Supreme Court observed that Teesta exploited the emotions of petitioner Zakia Jafri for ‘ulterior motives’.
“Antecedents of Teesta Setalvad need to be reckoned with and also because she has been vindictively persecuting this for her ulterior design by exploiting the emotions and sentiments of Zakia Jafri, the real victim of the circumstances,” the apex court said.
