Bhubaneswar: Heat slowly returned to western Odisha on Wednesday after a brief lull, while the coastal belt continued to get relief from tormenting weather after rain and thunderstorm at many places.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, Balangir and Nuapada emerged as hottest in the state, both recording 40 degree Celsius.

Malkangiri and Titilagarh recorded 39.5 degree Celsius each, while Sambalpur and Boudh came third with 39 degree Celsius. Talcher recorded 38.8 degrees Celsius while the maximum telperature at Jharsuguda and Sonepur stood at 38.5 degree Celsius.

In state capital Bhubaneswar and Cuttack city, the mercury came down to 36.7 and 37.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

On Tuesday, the state received considerable respite from the sweltering heat under the influence of Nor’wester rains. Nowhere in the state the temperature touched 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

The weather agency has predicted rain and thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind over several districts of Odisha during next 4-5 days.

After a drop of 5-6°C, the day temperature, however, will remain unchanged during this period.
The prediction has come as a respite for voters of Odisha, where the first round of elections will be held in four Lok Sabha seats – Nabarangpur, Berhampur, Koraput and Kalahandi and 28 Assembly constituencies on May 13.

While yellow warning has been issued till May 12, light to moderate rain/thundershower may continue at a few places in districts of south Odisha and at one or two places in north Odisha.
