Bhubaneswar: With heatwave persisting at some places, the day temperature in Odisha will continue to hover around 40 degree Celsius and more and remain 2-3°C above norma, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.
While heatwave may prevail at one or two places in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Sambalpur till 8.30 am on Tuesday, similar conditions are likely at one or two places in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Sambalpur in the subsequent 24 hours.
With no more heatwave warning thereafter, several places in the state may witness a gradual fall in the day temperature by 2-3°C after 2 to 3 days under the influence of nor’wester, the MeT office said.
Yellow warning for thunderstorm and lightning has been issued for several districts till April 22 morning. Light to moderate rain is also likely at some places during this period.
Notably, seven places had recorded temperatures above 37 degree Celsius – Jharsuguda (40.4 °C) Sambalpur (39.8°C) ,Keonjhar (39.4°C), Bhubaneswar (38.6°C), Balasore (38.4°C), Hirakud (38.4°C) and Chandbali (37.6°C) – by 11.30 this morning.
The mercury soared to 42.8 degrees Celsius in Jharsuguda by 2.30 pm followed by Sambalpur (42.6), Hirakud (40.8), Keonjhar (40) and Bhubaneswar (38.6).
On Sunday, Jharsuguda recorded the day’s highest of 43 degree Celsius followed by Boudh and Sambalpur at 42.5 degree Celsius and 42.4 degree Celsius respectively. The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 40 degree Celsius each, three degrees above the normal.
