Heatwave To Return Before May 20 Ph-II Polling In Odisha Amid Brief Rain Spell; IMD Sounds Yellow Alert

Bhubaneswar: Heatwave is likely to return to Odisha from May 20 after a brief spell of rain and thunderstorm in several parts of the state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

The weather agency said that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal around May 22 which may intensify into a depression around May 24.

In its midday bulletin, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar said that light to moderate rain/thundershower is likely to occur at few places over south Odisha and some places of northern region in the next 24 hours.

Issuing yellow warning, it said thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may occur at one or two places of Koraput, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, and Balangir districts during the period.

Heavy Rainfall may occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nuapada.

Similarly, thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur some parts of Nayagarh, Cuttack, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapada.

However, hot and humid weather condition will prevail at some places of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

On Sunday, thunderstorm with lightning may occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi.

Hot and humid weather condition is likely to prevail at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

The weather agency said that maximum temperature (day temperature) is likely to gradually rise by 2-4 degree Celsius in subsequent 4-5 days at many places over the districts of Odisha.

On May 20, heatwave condition is likely to occur at one or two places of Balangir, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Nuapada districts. The IMD also issues a yellow warning
