Jammu: After playing a key role in tracking terrorists in the dense forest during the Indian Army’s counter-terror operation in Jammu’s Battal region, the Army’s Belgian Malinois sniffer dog, Phantom, died.

Beating the odds posed by the challenging terrain, the dog tracked the terrorists’ movements, identified concealed explosives, and uncovered potential escape routes on Monday, reported the Financial Express.

But, Phantom sustained fatal injuries while shielding the soldiers during a confrontation with the terrorists. The loyal member of Army’s K9 unit, Phantom helped prevent casualties among the Indian troops.

The ambush had commenced in the early hours of Monday as the terrorists had struck an Army convoy, aiming to disrupt Diwali celebrations. Troops immediately retaliated and called in special forces and a mechanized column stationed nearby.

With the help of hi-tech devices, the Army operation neutralized the terror threat. And, Phantom’s legacy of bravery remains alive, symbolizing the resilience of Indian Army.
