Cuttack: The Orissa High Court has sought response from the state government on the conduct of the 9-day Rath Yatra of Goddess Biraja in Jajpur district beginning on October 17.

A division bench of Chief Justice Mohammad Rafiq and Justice BR Sarangi issued the directive on Monday after hearing the two public interest litigations (PILs) filed by the Mukti Mandapa Sevayat Parishad of the Biraja Temple and Jajpur District Lawyers’ Association.

The bench directed the Jajpur collector and the SP to file a counter on this matter which will be heard on October 8.

The petitions contended that Rath Yatra of the 13th-century temple is one of the most important rituals of the Goddess during the Durga Puja festival.
