Bhubaneswar: The season’s first floodwater will be released from Hirakud dam in Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Sunday (July 28).
According to Hirakud Dam authorities, the sluice gates of the dam will be opened at 9 am after the ceremonial puja. The collectors of Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Angul, Boudh, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Phulbani, Khurda, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur and Puri have also been asked to ensure that the riverbed downstream of the dam is cleared of temporary constructions or encroachments.
The water level of the reservoir has been increasing following heavy rain in upper catchment ares of the Mahanadi and stands at 604.75 feet against its intake capacity of 630 feet. Around 1,72,000 cusec floodwater is entering the dam.
