Cuttack: The historic Bali Jatra on the banks of river Mahanadi in Cuttack city of Odisha was opened to the visitors by Information and Public Relations Minister Pradeep Amat on Tuesday evening.
The 9-day mega event that is organised in memory of the maritime traditions of Odisha has been traditionally started on the day of Kartik Purnima which not only brings the end of holy Kartik month but also witnesses people, particularly women, floating paper boats to recall the sea voyage of Odia ‘Sadhavs’ (merchants) to South-East Asian countries for trade.
Tipped to be the biggest fair in the state, Bali Jatra registers footfall in lakhs as people throng the sprawling Mahanadi bank to purchase various items and indulge in merry-making. It also offers a good opportunity to artisans and traders for doing business while the government agencies use it as a suitable platform to promote awareness.
This time, more than 600 food stalls, 325 government stalls and 200 corporate stalls would open in the Bali Jatra ground. Besides, there would be around 400 stalls in the area of Pallishree mela spreading over 5 acre in the Jatra. The administration has also made arrangements for laser show as an added attraction this year.
Cuttack Mayor Subash Singh, Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab, Jagatsinghpur MP Rajashree Mallick and Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain were also present at the inauguration function.
The district administration, Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) and Commissionerate Police and other stakeholders have made elaborate arrangements for convenience of the visitors who are expected in large number as Bali Jatra is being held after a gap of two years due to COVID pandemic.
