Bhubaneswar: Houses of several drug peddlers were demolished by the authorities in Khudra district of Odisha on Wednesday amid tight security as part of the government’s zero tolerance approach towards drug abuse.
According to sources, the drive was undertaken after seizure of brown sugar in some parts of the district in recent past.
The authorities demolished the houses constructed illegally on government land in areas including Damasahi, Gurujang and Bhaliabadi. The demolition was carried out under the supervision of Khurda district Collector K Sudarshan Chakravarthy and Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kataria.
“We are adopting a zero tolerance approach against drug smuggling. Even if a small quantity of drug including brown sugar is found in someone’s possession, tough action is initiated,” the SP said.
Apart from filing a case, the police also initiates financial investigation and seizes the assets of drug peddlers as per law. If the accused is found to have encroached upon government land and constructed illegal construction, steps are taken in coordination with the administration to demolish such structures, he said.
