Bhubaneswar: Though the mercury in the political barometer is rising, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted conducive weather conditions during first-round polling in South Odisha on Monday with mercury hovering around 35 degree Celsius.
Voting will be held in four Lok Sabha seats of Berhampur, Kalahandi, Koraput and Nabarangpur along with 28 Assembly segments.
According to the weather agency, Odisha is likely to experience isolated to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and squally winds (30-50 kmph) till May 16. Isolated heavy rainfall may also occur on May 12-13.
There is a forecast for heavy rainfall at one or two places in Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Kendrapada, Jajpur, and Bhadrak on May 13. Berhampur is in Ganjam district and two of its Assembly segments are in Gajapati. Three Assembly seats of Koraput LS constituency are in Rayagada.
Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati. Thunderstorm with lightning is also likely at one or two places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, and Malkangiri.
Two Assembly constituencies under Kalahandi are in Nuapada district.
Light to moderate rain/thundershower is also likely at many places in coastal Odisha and at a few places in interior districts of the state. “The duration of rainfall triggered by nor’wester will be around 1 hour during which it will be accompanied by gusty wind. It will not be dangerous. The day temperature may also drop by 1-2°C. So, overall the weather will remain conducive,” Director of the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Manorama Mohanty told the media.

Meanwhile, yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph has been sounded for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj, till 8.30 am on Monday.
Heavy rainfall may also occur at one or two places in Rayagada, Koraput, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak districts.
On May 14, thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is likely at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar. Heavy rainfall may continue at one or two places in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, and Kandhamal.
While yellow warning for thunderstorm with lightning has also been issued for another two days, light to moderate rain/thundershower may continue at some places in the state till May 18.
The day temperature will remain constant during next 3-4 days and rise thereafter by about 3-4°C, the weather agency added.
