Puri: A resident of Sakhigopal in Puri district of Odisha got the shock of his life time when he found a large snake hanging from the wire casing near the ceiling fan in the living room of his house.
When the fan in the living room was switched on, members of the family of S K Kar spotted the huge snake. They got terrified and vacated the room. They were so frightened that they could not muster courage to switch the fan off.
On being informed, Nihar Ranjan Panda, a volunteer of Snake Helpline reached the spot and found a large Indian Rat snake hanging on to the electric wire casings with the fan running in full speed. Nihar shot a short video to keep the memory with him. Then he switched the fan off and slowly tried to pull the snake down off the wire casing with his snake hook.
However, the 7 ft snake jumped down and took shelter in a corner of the room underneath a furniture. Nihar then pulled the furniture and rescued the large snake. The snake was then put inside a bag and the Kar family got relief of their life.
“I had never seen such a scene in my life. Had the snake fallen it would have been cut into pieces with the fan blades,” said Nihar.
General Secretary of Snake Helpline Subhendu Mallik said Rat snakes are good climbers and the reptile might have gone there through the skylight holes following a rat.
The snake was released in its natural habitat away from the village in the night.
