Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has initiated concrete steps to strengthen the drainage system in Bhubaneswar in collaboration with IIT Roorkee.
Sharing this information on Thursday, Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra said that IIT Roorkee is preparing a comprehensive master plan to address waterlogging issues in the capital city.
Stating that the master plan is nearing completion, he said a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared after the plan is ready.
Noting that the existing drainage system in Bhubaneswar suffers from several flaws and deficiencies, the Minister said these issues are now being addressed through planned interventions.
Once the DPR is finalised, new construction works will be taken up to resolve the waterlogging problem in the capital city. The construction work will begin right after the monsoon ends, he said.
Noting that continuous rainfall over the past few months has delayed major construction activities, the Minister said severe waterlogging was faced in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday due to the unusually heavy rainfall.
The state government is committed to providing a long-term solution to the recurring problem of waterlogging in Bhubaneswar and that work will begin soon after the monsoon season, he added.
