Islamabad: Imran Khan has nominated former chief justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed as caretaker Prime Minister.
Imran was denotified as Prime Minister following the dissolution of National Assembly on Sunday after a no-confidence vote against him was dismissed by the deputy speaker.
Fawad Chaudhry, who was a minister in the outgoing Cabinet, said Imran took the decision following an approval from the core committee of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the Dawn reported.
Gulzar Ahmed, who was sworn in as Pakistan’s chief justice on December 21, 2019, was in office till February 2022.
President Arif Alvi had written to Imran and leader of the Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif to propose names of suitable persons for appointment as caretaker PM.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Supreme Court continued hearing the Opposition’s petition against Imran. The apex court observed that what happened in the National Assembly needs review and said it will deliver an appropriate order.
Hearing was adjourned for the day after hearing a set of arguments and the court will resume proceedings at noon on Tuesday.
