Berhampur: Setting an example of organ donation, a man from Odisha’s Ganjam district gave a new lease of life to six persons through his heart, kidneys, liver and corneas.

The man, whose noble act has won over the medical fraternity, identified as Sushil Sahu of Allapur village in Belaguntha block, was working as a labourer in a private company in Surat of Gujarat.

While working in the factory, Sushil collapsed on January 26 and was rushed to Prabhu General Hospital in Surat. The doctors diagnosed him to have suffered a stroke due to high blood pressure and declared him brain dead. The hospital authorities informed Sushil’s family members, who brought his body to their village on Saturday for cremation.

Before coming to Allapur, Sushil’s family members were convinced by the hospital authorities and Donate Life, a local NGO in Surat, which has been working in the field of organ donation for several years, to donate his organs, and they agreed.

Suhsil’s brother Anil Sahu said his brother was kept under observation for over 36 hours. When he did not show any sign of recovery, they decided to donate his vital organs.

Sushil’s heart, liver, kidney and corneas were removed and successfully transplanted to six different persons on Friday.

“The heart transplantation was done at a hospital in Chennai, while both kidney and liver transplantation was done in Ahmedabad and the corneas were transplanted at a hospital in Surat,” said Nilesh Mandlewal of Donate Life was quoted as saying by TOI.

His two lungs could not be transplanted as the receiver test, he added.
