Incessant Rain Triggers Flash Floods, Inundate Several Areas In Odisha’s Koraput

Koraput: Heavy showers triggered by low pressure in Bay of Bengal, pounding Odisha’s Koraput over the last two days, have resulted in flash floods in different parts of the district.

Several areas in Koraput remained water logged while a number of villages were marooned due to the flood-like situation on Sunday. Besides, large agricultural patches were inundated due to the heavy rains, said sources.

The worst affected was Kundra block where Digapur village was submerged in water affecting normal life. The Biri and Kolab river were in spate due to torrential rain affecting communication to and from Jeypore, sources added.

Boipariguda block recorded the maximum 170mm rainfall followed by Kundra where 71mm rainfall was recorded in last 24 hours, the met department informed. Relentless showers is likely to worsen the situation, said locals.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert of extremely heavy rainfall warning for coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha for Sunday. Similarly, the regional met office in Bhubaneswar has issued heavy to very heavy rainfall warning in parts of the state between Sunday and Tuesday.

While heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Ganjam, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Koraput and Rayagada districts, one or two places in Cuttack, Puri, Khurda and six other districts are expected to experience heavy showers on Sunday.

Squally weather with strong surface wind speed reaching 40 kmph to 5 0 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph is likely to prevail over northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal along and off Odisha coast between Sunday and Wednesday. Fishermen are advised to not venture into the sea during the period, the met office stated.
