Mumbai: India recorded what could be the country’s first Omicron death on Thursday, according to news reports.
The Omicron variant was detected in the samples of a 52-year-old man, who recently died of heart attack at Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC)’s Yashwantrao Chavan Hospital in Pune.
But the Maharashtra government has not categorically declared that the cause of death was the Omicron variant.
“The death of this patient is due to non-COVID-19 reasons. Coincidently, the National Institute of Virology (NIV) report has revealed that he was infected with the Omicron variant of COVID-19,” a health bulletin by the state Public Health Department said.
