Inter-State ‘Chadi-Baniyan’ Gang Busted; 11 Robbers Arrested In Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Eleven members of the notorious inter-state ‘Chadi and Baniyan’ gang were arrested and several stolen articles as well as weapons seized from them in Dhauli area of Bhubaneswar.

Giving this information, Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Prateek Singh said the gang members were involved in at least 16 cases of burglaries in different parts of Odisha capital and other places.

The gang members were nabbed when Dhauli Police Station staff were performing night patrolling duty. The criminals were caught near Tarakeswar Temple near Daya river when they were on their way to commit crime in a group.

The accused were identified as Garib Giri, Daulat Giri, Sunil Mogia, Malakar, Sangli Malakar, Kunal MalakarSankar Sigra, Raju Bagri, Sanu BagriSantosh Das and Ramsingh Chauhan, all of them from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand.

The gang was involved in a series of house burglaries in Dhauli, Badagad, Laxmisagara, Airport and Air Field areas and committing crime with same modus operandi.

From available CCTV of different spots and after analysing the CCTV footages, it was clear that they were wearing half pant / Chadi and Baniyan at the time of committing crime and tying their rest wearing apparels on their waist without footwear. They were entering houses by breaking open the window grills using house breaking instruments and operating in between 2 am to 4 am at night. They neither use any vehicle nor mobile phones.

The inter-state criminals belong to notorious ‘Chadi and Baniyan’ gang or “Kachha & Baniyangroup or “Chadi and Gamji group. The gang members have no definite place of stay or address. They are locally known as “Banjaras“, he said.

For last one year they have been active in Odisha, staying as a group in Bhubaneswar railway station and sometimes at Cuttack and Puri railway stations. In the day time they wander here and there as labourer and in late hour of the night commit crime.

They target colonies close to roads, newly developed, less lighted area and choose footpaths to reach their target houses.

After committing crime they decamp by changing their dress and availing vehicles plying on the road and pretend as labourer. Deliberately they never bring mobile phones to the place of crime to avoid leaving digital foot print. They dispose of robbed articles to different persons, shopkeepers, jewelry shops.
