Mumbai: As the deadline for retention of players for IPL 2025 ended on Diwali evening, the picture was clear as to where which team stands ahead of the mega player auction next month.
Among the biggest names to create a flutter were Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and MS Dhoni.
There was a lot of talk over Team India skipper Rohit’s future after he was unceremoniously removed as Mumbai Indians (MI) captain before IPL 2024 and had to play under Hardik Pandya’s leadership. But the five-time champions have managed to convince the 37-year-old Rohit to stay put, along with Jasprit Bumrah, Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma.
Pant, who has made a spectacular comeback from his near-fatal car accident, will be up in the auction pool after Delhi Capitals (DC) released him. There is a theory doing the rounds that Pant could be in Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) radar as a captain, as Dhoni no longer plays the leadership role.
There was a lot of interest surrounding Dhoni. By agreeing to be retained as an uncapped player (for Rs 4 crore) at the age 43, the CSK legend has made it clear that he would like to contribute as a player as and when he can.
