Bengaluru: The stars of India’s U-19 World Cup-winning team were expected to be in demand at the IPL Auction. They did evoke plenty of interest on Day 2 of the mega auction, with two of them striking gold.
Rajvardhan Hangargekar and Raj Angad Bawa became young crorepatis on Sunday, while India U-19 captain Yash Dhull also became an IPL player with a price purse of Rs 50 lakh.
Bawa, a medium-pacer and a handy left-handed batsman, emerged as the richest India U-19 player as Punjab Kings purchased him for Rs 2 crore after outbidding Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians.
The Himachal-born cricketer, grandson of Olympic hockey gold-medallist Tarlochan Bawa, destroyed England in the U-19 World Cup final with figures of 5/35 and also chipped in with 35 in India’s successful chase of 195.
Hangargekar, another allrounder, had a base price of Rs 30 lakh and it was Mumbai Indians who first showed interest. Lucknow Super Giants and Chennai Super Kings then joined the fray. It was four-time champions CSK who eventually netted the Maharashtra cricketer.
Dhull was expected to fetch a high price, and the middle-order batsman was acquired by Delhi Capitals for Rs 50 lakh.
