Japanese Princess Mako Marries Commoner Boyfriend, Loses Royal Status

Tokyo: Japanese Princess Mako has married her college sweetheart Kei Komuro and thus lost her royal status, reported BBC.

Female imperial family members lose their status once they marry to a “commoner” under Japanese law although the provision isn’t there for male members.

Mako also refused the usual rites of a royal wedding while turning down a payment offered to royal females upon their departure from the family.

She is the royal family’s first female member to decline both.

The couple are likely to shift base to the United States — where Komuro is a lawyer — after marriage.

The incident has drawn comparisons with British royals, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, earning the newlyweds the nickname “Japan’s Harry and Meghan”.
