Bhubaneswar: The prime accused in the alleged human sacrifice and cannibalism in Kerala is a sociopath and sexual pervert, said police on Thursday.

Speaking to media, Kochi Police chief CH Nagaraju said the main accused in the murder of two women, Mohammed Shafi has psychotic disorders. He is a ‘psychopath’ and a ‘sexual pervert’.

“Shafi is addicted to sexual perversion and takes pleasure in cruelty. He committed acts of sexual perversion on the women and supplied women for sacrifice and cannibalism to the clients,” Times Now quoted Kochi DCP S Sasidharan, the chief investigator of the case, as saying.

Kerala police are also investigating the rape angle in the case. “We’re also investigating if any sexual exploitation has been done by Shafi. There are 8 cases registered against Shafi under various offences apart from this human sacrifice ritual case,” said Kochi DCP S Sasidharan, the chief investigator of the case.

Kerala police also said the couple has “confessed” to eating the flesh of the two women, suspecting a case of cannibalism apart from torturing and mutilating the bodies of the victims. Describing the gory details of the murders, police said a knife was inserted in the private parts of the victims, after which their throats were slit. One of the bodies was reportedly chopped up into 56 pieces.

Meanwhile, a court in Kerala has sent all three accused in the case to judicial custody. Kerala police had arrested Shafi and a couple Bhagaval Singh and his wife Laila following an investigation into missing cases of two women. During questioning, the couple confessed to having murdered the two women.

A judicial first-class magistrate court in Ernakulam district forwarded all three to judicial custody for 14 days after the police produced them in connection with the case.

“Prime accused Shafi used the social media site Facebook to find people with financial difficulties. Bhagaval Singh and Laila agreed to human sacrifice. Shafi had used FB on his wife’s phone but she didn’t know,” Times Now quoted Sasidharan as saying.

Shafi, who had lured the two women to Bhagaval’s house, has been out on bail in a 2020 sexual assault case. Shafi allegedly advised the couple to carry out a ‘human sacrifice’ to end their financial troubles and become wealthy, police said.

The female victims have been identified as 49-year-old Roselyn of Thrissur and the 52-year-old Padma from Tamil Nadu. They were allegedly tied up and tortured before being strangled.
