Bhubaneswar: Gruesome and chilling details are emerging on how two women were sacrificed in Kerala and their body parts probably cooked and consumed by Bhagaval Singh and Laila, on the advice of Muhammad Shafi, to put an end to their financial woes and attain prosperity in life. The three accused in the Kerala human sacrifice case have been sent to 12 days in police custody.

This case of alleged human sacrifice and cannibalism brings back memories of similar depraved and shocking incidents that rocked India in the past.

Nithari Killings

The 2006 serial killing at Nithari is one of the most horrifying and gruesome cases of 2006. Businessman Moninder Singh Pandher and his domestic help Surinder Koli were arrested on December 29, 2006, after the police recovered skeletons and other belongings of missing girls from the drain outside their house D-5 referred to as a “House of Horrors”.

Koli had allegedly killed as many as 19 girls, chopping their bodies to pieces before throwing them in the backyard outside their house. He confessed to having sex with his dead victims and also eating some of their body parts.

While Koli was awarded the death penalty by a special CBI court in Ghaziabad in May 2022, Pandher was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in the case.

Indian Predator

On November 30, 2012, Raj Kolander along with Vakshraj Kol was sentenced to life as the court classified the murder of journalist Dhirendra Singh as a ‘rarest of rare’ case in November 2012. He killed more than 15 people. Kolander’s modus operandi included shooting and then cutting the victim’s bodies into several pieces. A diary recovered from Naini farmhouse revealed that he would cook and eat the brains of his victims. The skull fascinated him and his obsession with his victims’ caste was evident from how caste or surname was written on the back of the skull, ranging from ‘Srivastava’ to ‘Pandit’ to ‘Muslim’.  The killer used to surround himself with these skulls and hold an adalaat (court hearing) of his own. He is also the subject of the Netflix docu-series Indian Predator, which was released this September.

Ludhiana’s ‘Cannibal’ Teen

A 16-year-old boy, accused of killing and cannibalising a nine-year-old boy in Ludhiana, was allegedly inspired by some TV shows. The teen confessed to having cut the child’s body into pieces after strangulating him to death, eating his flesh and also drinking his blood before dumping the body — in six parts — in a sack on a school compound. “He had craving for human flesh. He also confessed to drinking the boy’s blood. He also said he was influenced by crime shows on television and watched them regularly,” the police were quoted as saying by media.

Case Of Manipur

W Ramananda alias Rouso (39) of Kontha Ahallup, was arrested along with one Gopen and Naren, on November 19 by a team of Imphal West District Police Commando from Lairikyengbam Leikai in Manipur for allegedly threatening a Medical Officer-in-Charge of one Community Health Centre. During interrogation, Ramananda allegedly confessed to having “consumed cooked human flesh”, India Today reported.

Cannibalism In Tea Estate Murder

Cannibalism was reported in the gruesome murder of a tea garden owner and his wife in the Tinsukia district of eastern Assam after two witnesses revealed how some assailants were devouring human flesh. Mridul Kumar Bhattacharya, owner of MKB Tea Estate, and his wife Rita Bhattacharya, were allegedly murdered by garden workers over the arrest of two workers by the police, the report added.
