Bhubaneswar: The elephant which had killed four persons in Odisha’s Jajpur district a month back, died in Chandaka sanctuary on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on Monday.

Forest officials said the marauding elephant had to be kept tied with heavy chains as it had become more violent. While trying to break free, it had sustained a deep wound on the leg, which got infected.

Despite efforts by a team of Forest officials and veterinary doctors of the Odisha University of Agriculture Technology (OUAT), the elephant succumbed to its injuries.

The Forest staff had brought the killer elephant from Jajpur to Goribadi area in Chandaka sanctuary on January 31. But as it became more aggressive towards Jasoda, a female kumki (trained) elephant, it was later shifted to Kumarkhanti and kept tied with iron chains.

The OUAT veterinary doctor said that as the elephant was tranquillised five times, its health had deteriorated. Though it was given life-saving drugs, it could not recover.

Earlier, some wildlife experts had suggested to the Forest Department to remove the chains and keep the elephant in an enclosure.
