Jharsuguda: With mystery shrouding the motive behind the killing of Naba Kishore Das, the FIR lodged by the police states that accused Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gopal Krushna Das had fired at the Odisha Minister from his 9mm service pistol with a clear intention to kill.
The FIR has been lodged by Inspector-In-Charge (IIC) of Brajarajnagar police station, Pradyumna Swain, against Gopal Das, who was the ASI of Chandhi Chowk outpost, sources said.
FIR states – ASI GK Das of Gandhi Chowk Police Outpost, who was deployed for traffic clearance duty came close to Minister Naba Kishore Das & opened fire from his service pistol from a close range aiming at Minister with a clear intention to kill him.
On the basis of the complaint, a case has been registered under Section 307 of the IPC and 27 (1) of the Arms Act.
As per the FIR, the Minister was scheduled to inaugurate the office of Chairperson/Vice Chairperson of Brajrajnagar in the Lift and Shift Building at Gandhi Chowk on Sunday (January 29, 2023).
The accused ASI, who was deployed for traffic clearance duty of the minister’s programme, approached Naba Das and opened fire from his service pistol. He fired from a very close range aiming at Naba Das with a clear intention of killing, the complaint said.

The accused also fired two rounds of bullets when the IIC and a constable tried to overpower him. Subsequently, the IIC and another person sustained injuries in the firing. The IIC and the constable eventually managed to disarm him, it said.
The Minister, who was allegedly shot in the chest, was rescued in a critical condition and rushed to the Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for treatment. Minister Das was later airlifted to Bhubaneswar and admitted to Apollo Hospital, where he succumbed to the bullet injury.
While the Crime Branch of Odisha Police is investigating the case and its sleuths have been questioning the accused ASI, the exact motive behind his action in firing at the Minister is yet to be ascertained.
