Kolkata: A month after taking over the Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder case from Kolkata Police on Calcutta High Court’s order, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested former RG Kar Medical College & Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal on Saturday night.

Produced in Sealdah court on Sunday afternoon, the duo was remanded to three-day CBI custoday.

The CBI told the court that there was a possibility of a “larger conspiracy.”

Call recordings have revealed that Ghosh — who was previously arrested by CBI in a case pertaining to financial irregularities during his tenure at RG Kar Hospital — had spoken to Mondal on August 9, the day the 31-year-old trainee doctor’s semi-naked body was found at RG Kar Hospital.

According to CBI, Ghosh and Mondal played vital roles in shielding the crime, as they tried to downplay the heinous incident, hence there has to be a thorough probe.

CBI’s counsel told the court that authorities tried to float a suicide theory, though the nature of injuries showed it was a case of sexual assault.

CBI said Tala PS OC Mondal is not among the accused in the rape and murder case.

“He has been arrested on charges of delay in filing FIR and missing evidence,” CBI counsel said.

Mamata’s tea diplomacy fails, state govt-doctors deadlock continues

Meanwhile the resident doctors continued their strike and protests on a rainy Sunday, sticking to their five-point demand.

A delegation of 30 doctors went to minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence on Saturday evening for a much-awaited meeting between the two sides.

However, the talks failed to materialise yet again on the issue of live video stream and videography.

The doctors climbed down from their stand of live telecast of the talks, while Mamata said that the entire proceedings would be videographed and minutes of the meeting recorded and signed by both parties.

However, the doctors wanted the video recording, which they wanted to show hundreds of other fellow-doctors who have been holding fort at the Swasthya Bhaban for the last five days.

The CM refused, saying that she was not in a position to accept all their demands.

He assurance that the video won’t be used by the government or her party, and that she could hand over the video to students after taking Supreme Court’s permission failed to convince the doctors.

Back in a huddle amidst continuous rain, turning down the CM’s request to come inside and have tea, the doctors agreed to the CM’s condition around 9.30 pm.

But health minister Chandrima Bhattacharya and chief secretary Manoj Pant informed them it was too late for talks.
