Kolkata: A man in West Bengal’s Ketugram in East Burdwan district punished his wife for daring to dream of becoming a nurse. And how? He simply chopped off her right hand!  Renu Khatun had recently gotten the job of a nurse in a state-run hospital. Apparently, she had been preparing for the job for three years and was due to join next week.

According to media reports, Mohammad allegedly smothered Renu Khatun before severing her hand. After she fell unconscious, he took her to the local hospital and hid the severed hand at their home. The incident came to light after Khatun gained consciousness and informed what happened to her.

Mohammad and his parents were against her wish to work as a government employee. Khatun used to work in a private healthcare hospital before marriage. Her husband and in-laws were against her decision to work. She had also complained to her father that they did not want her to work at the hospital.

After they heard about the incident, Khatun’s father, Azizul Haque and his son Ripan Sheikh shifted her from the hospital to a nursing home.

Mohammad and his parents are absconding.
