Bhubaneswar: Kolkata Police has sought order from the SDJM court, here, for taking three arrested members of Jamtara gang, allegedly involved in inter-state cyber crime, into remand.
A team of Kiolkata Police, which arrived in Bhubaneswar on Thursday, sought the court’s permission for interrogation of the accused who were wanted in several cyber frauds in their city.
The Odisha Crime Branch had arrested the three Jamtara gang members from Bhubaneswar on January 29 this year. They are wanted in over 170 cases across 20 states including West Bengal.
The gang members, identified as Pradhum Kumar Mandal, Krishnakumar Mandal and Chetlal Mandal of Jharkhand, were staying in a house on rent in Bhubaneswar since December last year.
According to the Crime Branch, the gang, operating from Jamtara in Jharkhand, has been committing cyber crime by cheating people through UPI, credit card and other electronic banking operations across the country.
The arrested fraudsters have confessed during the interrogation that they used to contact the people by sending bulk SMS and voice calls impersonating as bank officials and ask their bank details for updating the KYC. Later, they would use the bank details to withdraw money from the people’s accounts through fraudulent means.
