Bhubaneswar: Odisha Governor Raghubar Das on Friday, demanded that the culprits in the Kolkata rape-murder case be given the strictest punishment after hearing the case in a fast-track within 15 days.
He was responding to a memorandum given to him by women’s organisations of Odisha regarding the heinous and shameful crime committed against a trainee doctor in West Bengal.
“Not only women but common people across the country are disturbed by the incident. Such incidents should not happen in a civilised society. Today, the entire country, including the women of Odisha, are agitated. I demand that the culprits should be given strictest punishment after hearing the case in a fast-track court within 15 days,” the Governor told PTI.
He said India is the only country that worships ‘Nari Shakti.’ It is time for us to be united as a society to create awareness about the need to respect women, he added.
Meanwhile, in the latest development, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written a second letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing concern over the lack of response to her earlier appeal for stronger legislation on crimes against women in the wake of the trainee doctor’s rape and murder in Kolkata.
Acknowledging the reply she received from the Minister of Women and Child Development, the Trinamool Congress supremo said it “barely attends the gravity of the issue raised in my letter”.
She added, “I am of the thought that the seriousness of the subject and its relevance to society have not been adequately appreciated while sending out this generic reply.”
