Bhubaneswar: In a case of hit-and-run, a labourer was killed after allegedly being run over by a speeding vehicle near Rajmahal Square in Bhubaneswar.
The mishap reportedly took place in the wee hours of Saturday when the labourer was sleeping on the footpath near Rajmahal Square under the jurisdiction of Capital Police Station.
While the deceased is yet to be identified, the police have launched an investigation into the accident. Efforts are on to ascertain his identity.
According to sources, the speeding car suddenly veered off the road, moved onto the footpath and the labourer came under the vehicle. Some others who were asleep beside him escaped narrowly. While the driver of the vehicle did not stop and fled the scene, the labourer succumbed to injuries.
Police are examining the CCTV footage of the area as part of the investigation. Preliminary probe showed that the red colour car was on its way from AG Square towards Rajmahal Square when it suddenly moved onto the footpath.
While the car has been badly damaged, the driver had fled the scene. A bank cheque book, some documents and other articles were found inside the vehicle.
