New Delhi: Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra was on Wednesday granted interim bail for eight weeks by the Supreme Court.

According to the order passed by Justices Surya Kant and JK Maheshwari, Ashish can’t live in Uttar Pradesh or Delhi and its nearby areas while he is out on bail. He has to leave UP within a week.

The top court said any attempt by Ashish or his family to influence witnesses would lead to his bail being cancelled.

However, Ashish — accused of killing protesting farmers in UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri 15 months ago – won’t be released today as the jail authorities didn’t receive his release order, reported ANI.

“I think the release order will not come tomorrow due to Republic Day. Whenever we get the order, he will be released,” said jail superintendent VK Mishra.

On October 3, 2021, four farmers were among eight persons who lost their lives. The protesting farmers were allegedly run over by an SUV in which Ashish was seated. In subsequent violence, a journalist, two BJP workers and driver of the SUV were killed.

Justices Surya Kant and Maheshwari said that it is ‘imperative’ to balance the right of victims and accused.
