Lawyers Resort To Agitation In Protest Against Heritage Corridor Works In Puri

Puri: The members of Puri District Bar Association on Thursday staged a demonstration in the town in protest against the construction works for heritage corridor within the restricted area around Jagannath Temple, here.

The lawyers, wearing black badges, resorted to agitation a day after filing an FIR at Singhadwar police station against district administration and the agencies engaged in the construction works.

They alleged that the administration was carrying out construction works in violation of the norms of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and National Monument Authroity (NMA). While the norms prescribe that no structures should be constructed within 100 metre of the boundary wall of the temple, huge ditches were dug up and huge pillars erected within 75 metre, they added.

They further said due to such constructions with heavy machineries, there was a threat to the of the main temple and other structures on its premises. Besides, the administration had not obtained the permission in this regard from either ASI or NMA, they added.

The Bar members threatened that if the administration does not stop the construction works in next few days, they would file challenge in the court.

Earlier, the Bar members had held a meeting with district collector to draw his attention to the issue and take necessary action. But the meeting failed to yield any result.
