Cuttack: A foreign liquor shop has been sealed by the Excise department in Barang area of Odisha’s Cuttack district after the shop owner was fined Rs 20 lakh by a consumer court for Maximum Retail Price (MRP) violation.
The shop, located at Ramdaspur under the jurisdiction of Barang police station, was reportedly charging Rs 10 more than the MRP per bottle/can from customers.
Annoyed over the MRP violation by the IMFL outlet, a customer lodged a complaint with the consumer court, which imposed the penalty after hearing the matter. Following this, a special team from the Excise department conducted a surprise check and sealed the shop. Surprise checks were also conducted at various other liquor shops in the area.
Cuttack Excise Superintendent Debashish Patel said that the consumer court has slapped a Rs 20 lakh fine on the shop and directed the department to seal it for MRP violation.
Strict action will be taken against such incidents and cases will be registered against the shop owners violating the MRP rules, the official added
