Jajpur: The death of a minor girl while undergoing treatment at a CHC sparked off tension as the locals vandalised the hospital in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Sunday.

As per reports, Biranchi Gedi of Alipur had brought his 5-year-old daughter Arpita for treatment to the community health centre (CHC) at Bari in the district as she was having fever. An AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) doctor in the hospital administered an antibiotic injection to her to bring down the fever.

After some time, Arpita started vomiting and having loose motion. Before the doctors could carry out further treatment, she succumbed. Biranchi took her back to her house and informed the people of his locality.

Enraged over the death of the girl during treatment, the locals went to the CHC and started ransacking it. They damaged the furniture and set fire to medicines and document.

An agitated Biranchi said, “My daughter died due to negligence of the doctors in the hospital. She was having a mild fever. But the doctor administered a high dose of antibiotic injection which she could not resist and died. We want stringent action against the doctors and nurses responsible for her death.”

On being informed, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr Shibhasish Maharana and local Tehsildar accompanied by a team from Bari police station went to the CHC. They pacified the agitated people and brought the situation under control.

The CDMO assured the irate locals that he would order an investigation into the incident to ascertain the cause of the child’s death. If anybody will be found guilty, stern action will be taken against him, he added.
